Position Description

We have a unique opportunity for candidates to provide on-call (same day or with notice) reader/scribe services for individuals with visual or cognitive impairments within the Maryland District and Circuit Court systems. These individuals may need assistance with written materials, including court documents, and may request that someone read documents to them during court proceedings. Individuals who have visual impairments or are blind may use hand-held devices to take notes, but if they do not, the reader may also serve as a scribe. Individuals with visual impairments or who are blind may also require the reader/scribe to verbally describe (visually interpret) visual evidence or convey what is happening in the courtroom.

A reader/scribe (or visual interpreter) must be careful not to make decisions for or give advice to the person requesting assistance. They must read documents or describe actions or visual evidence in a neutral way, without interpretation or elaboration. The reader or visual interpreter should maintain confidentiality both about the person they are assisting and any information they access in providing assistance.

Reader/Scribe must have:

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, a good command of the English language, have a well-developed vocabulary, and the ability to read court/legal documents.
  • The ability to read effectively, accurately, and impartially using any necessary specialized vocabulary.
  • Good writing skills, be able to write legibly, and be able to utilize a computer as necessary.

Reader/Scribe must be able to:

  • Communicate professionally and courteously with the individual with a disability, as well as attorneys and court personnel.
  • Work well with a diverse population.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Pass a background check.
